"Mind your own Business"

I need to represent the UD Sports and Entertainment program. Got this from London.

‘Mind Your Own Business’
Music Scene Gets a Boost from Local Business School

Irving, TX- North Texas is no stranger to music talent. With Norah Jones, Erykah Badu, Jessica and Ashley Simpson, Bowling For Soup, and Pat Green all calling North Texas home, the area has produced a wealth of talent. However, many local artists never make it past the city limits. They may draw large crowds at local nightclubs and even sell a lot of CDs out of the trunk of their cars, but they’re never signed by a major record label. Often, business acumen (versus musical talent) is the critical success factor that makes the difference.

The University of Dallas College of Business is working to change the music landscape in North Texas. Through its new Music Business Academy, the university is offering seminars that focus on the various business aspects of the industry. In addition, the university has planned several graduate courses on the music business that will be offered in their MBA program in Sports & Entertainment Management. “We’ve met with a lot of local artists and music executives and we have found that there is a real need to develop the music business knowledge in DFW. The talent is here, but the business knowledge is not,” says Dr. Scott Wysong, Academic Program Director for the school’s Sports & Entertainment MBA Program.

Recently, the university hosted a free seminar open to the public entitled “Are You Radio Ready,” which focused on careers in radio and tips for artists on getting their songs played on local radio. To examine these issues, Music Business Academy co-founder and noted entertainment attorney, Ward White IV, moderated a panel discussion with local radio program directors, Skip Cheatam of K104 and John Candelaria of 97.9 The Beat. According to White, “Skip Cheatam and John Candelaria are two of the best radio program directors in the country, not just Dallas. They did an excellent job of giving local artists an insiders’ view of the business side of radio.”

In attendance were a number of local record label executives and artists. “Dallas music needs what the University of Dallas is doing. There is such a rich history of music in this great city and we need to come together to let the nation know about Dallas music,” says local Grammy award winning musician, Art Greenhaw who was in attendance at the seminar and has also spearheaded the university’s efforts. “I’ve been in the music business 25 plus years, but I really learned a lot from the recent seminar with the two radio program directors. There are lessons for all musicians to be learned from rap/hip-hop music.”

“Learning business tips from each other regardless of the genre of music is the name of game,” says local music executive and University of Dallas MBA student, Rodney “London” Williams. “I work every day with a number of very talented musicians, yet they don’t understand what it takes to make it the next level. The University of Dallas has a unique program and approach and I wanted to be a part of that.”

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween!

I went to the mall after work today to avoid the Trick-or-Treaters in my neighborhood. I've bought candy these past couple of years but never had Trick-or-Treaters, leaving me with tons of candy. Okay, not tons, but enough. So this year I decided not to buy candy and just completely avoid the kiddos. I went to Grapevine Mills. Now that's the way to go. I like the traditional going from house to house, but the mall was filled with the cutest kids ever! Cowboys, Princesses, Animals, even Tigger and an Oompa-Loompa (which was a little scary). But being inside, every store had candy. By the time I left, many stores had signs that said "No more candy"...I thought it would have been really ironic if the candy stores had the same signs, but they didn't. Some ice cream place was even giving out samples...YUM! Anyway, I hope everyone had a fun and safe Halloween. Are you ready for Thanksgiving?

I got myself a J-O-B!

Yes, you read correctly. I got a job! My technical experience and my music experience come together on this one...SWEET! I pretty much get to work on an Online Indie Music retailer! Since I started this past Thursday and I've worked up at the restaurant, I am T-I-R-E-D. So I'm cutting this post short. Thanks again to Beth for finding the site that led to this job!

By the way, prayers go out to all in the Galveston area. My family got out of the area okay and are now with my cousin in Arlington. My other cousin decided to stay in Houston. All we can do now is just wait. God bless us all.

Ten on Tuesday

Thought this topic was interesting and figured I'd give it a shot.

10 Ways Your Country Can Change for the Better (in no particular order)

1. Get a new president...I've thought that since the last election.
2. TRUE freedom of speech. No matter how hateful, everyone is entitled to their own opinions.
3. Make diversity and sensitivity classes mandatory. At least offer a day or week. We live in a changing and diverse world. Understanding one another may help us get along better.
4. People need to be more respectful when they are on their cell phones. If you are at the cashier or about to talk to a person, hang up the phone...you can call the person back. ARGH!
5. Refocus back on the US instead of other countries. If they need help they will ask us, but what right do we have to go in and tell people how to run their countries?
6. Promote vacations within the US. I have yet to see Mt. Rushmore or the Grand Canyon. Better our economy by spending at home.
7. Continue to support our troops no matter the politics on why they are still in other countries. Even though people don't agree with them being there, the troops need to know we still support THEM.
8. Clean up our big cities. Citizens need to take responsibility in the image of their city.
9. Require every big city to examine their public transportation system. Dallas only recently has really boomed in their DART system, but is behind compared to cities like Chicago, NYC, DC. This might help with the air quality too.
10. Americans need to show the love and support they have showed during 9/11 and Katrina all year round. National tragedies can bring the worst out in people, but the best definitely outweighs it.
